PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Jay Williams was a barrister of the New South Wales Bar Association and was a practitioner of the High Court of Australia and Federal Court of Australia from 2012 to 2022. Jay’s practice focused on human rights law, constitutional and administrative law, refugee law, criminal law, indigenous law, environmental law and public international law. Prior to coming to the Bar, Jay practiced as a solicitor of the NSW Supreme Court and an academic, holding a Master of Law and Legal Practice, with a major in Human Rights, International Law and the Environment at the University of Technology, Sydney and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne with a major in Political Science, Critical Theory and International Relations. With a primary focus on human rights law, Jay has been involved in several test cases before the High Court of Australia and the Federal Court of Australia, various public policy research projects and has been published by leading peer reviewed journals, including the International Journal of Human Rights.


In terms of major cases, Jay worked with a team who prevented the death sentence being imposed against two Australians in Vietnam. Jay has worked on many hundreds of refugee cases in Afghanistan, Cambodia, the Congo, China, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Nauru, the Occupied Territories of Palestine, Pakistan, PNG, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka South America, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Vietnam. Jay has also worked on major criminal matters, involving organised crime, terrorism, arms and narcotics. Jay has also worked on major native title matters in Australia. Over the last decade, Jay was a participant of the Human Rights Council of Australia concerning immigration detention Nauru and PNG. Participants included the Australian Human Rights Commission, Amnesty lnternational, the Australian Red Cross, the lnternational Commission of Jurists, the Human Rights Law Centre, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Law Council of Australia and the Refugee Advice and Casework Services.

Researcher - The Social Impact of the Jabiluka and Ranger Uranium Mines on the Aboriginal People of the Kakadu and Arnhem Land Region – which involved a 5 year study on the traditional law, spirituality and culture of a remote Indigenous Tribe from Arnhem Land.
